A company continuously known for excelling in the IT sector, Rainer van Beckum talks to David Clancy to discuss the world from the perspective of Megabyte Ltd |
| With 30 years of experience in the IT sector, Rainer van Beckum is now the newly appointed CEO of Megabyte Ltd, taking the helm after the retirement of John Ambrogio. The company prides itself on its continuing excellence within the Maltese market and now aims to live up to people’s expectations of the abilities of IT this side of the recession.

“It’s no good thinking that we can go back to the way things were before the recession,” explains Mr van Beckum. “We have to think about it in terms of looking at how the world was, and how it is now.” IT is becoming a particularly useful tool in the post-recession market as people look to ways of consolidating customer and client bases, as well as having the desire to put in place a system which enables quick reporting and analysis of business data, thereby enabling them to identify areas which could be improved or expanded into.
“During the recession a large amount of businesses cut down on IT resources simply because they didn’t view upgrades as financially viable at the time. Now, however, we are beginning to see a lot more interest in our services than ever before,” he adds. Megabyte Ltd offers a ‘one-stop-shop’ in IT solutions for all of a business’ IT needs, including the use of new processes to completely revise the business model. “Rather than adding IT to a business, we look to merge it with the business in order to create an alignment between the business and IT, a strong partnership if you will, enabling the use of IT to support our clients,” enthuses Mr van Beckum.
The CEO identifies a strong ‘missing’ sector in the Maltese market; online shopping. He explains to me that Maltese businesses have such opportunity within this area in as much as the hassle-free service they could provide when compared to outside online companies. “There are only a very small percentage of online shoppers that use Maltese companies when compared to other nationalities in their own regions.”
An obvious reason for this is the simple fact that fewer business imports results in higher costs; meaning that the businesses have to charge more than many outside companies. The customers then realise that it is much cheaper to order from elsewhere and do so. However, Mr van Beckum argues that the services which could be provided by Maltese online shops could far outweigh the cost difference due to the geographical closeness of the business and customer here in Malta.
“Delivery time would shatter that of any outside company, as well as the ease of customer returns persuading more potential buyers to go ahead and make the purchase, knowing that they can easily return the product to a local establishment if they’re unhappy,” explains Mr van Beckum enthusiastically.
It is a complete IT service for such business models which Megabyte excels at, enabling the client to have tailor-made software which fits into their company perfectly. Besides offering products from the global leaders such as HP, Oracle, Microsoft, Cisco and Micros Fidelio, the company also offers a 24/7 service to their clients. “I feel this is really the key to our success,” states Mr van Beckum. “Without our extremely experienced, dedicated and well-trained staff, it would not be possible to provide this service.”
A testament to the relationship between Megabyte and its staff is the fact that no employees were lost during the recession. Instead, the company used the time to further train their dedicated staff ready for the post-recession market. This enables them to stay ahead of the competition that is now branching into the full range of services which Megabyte were already offering before the recession. |
