The EU Green Paper on an Integrated Maritime Policy: Where does Malta fit in?
11 September, 2006

Joe Borg, Commissioner for Fisheries and Maritime Policye Borg, EU Commissioner for Fisheries and Maritime Affairs

The Vodafone Economic Forum at the Radisson Baypoint Hotel
Organised by the Malta Economic Update with the collaboration of the Maritime Law Advisory Council

Malta has been a sea-faring nation for centuries.  Since time immemorial, the sea has been the source of Malta's prosperity - it is where we relax, yet our businesses depend on it as well.  70% of all maritime traffic in the Med passes between Sicily and Malta - one of the narrowest of passages - and therefore the threat of a major environmental disaster is always there.
So how do we protect and care for our maritime environment?  How do we keep the seabed clean and thriving fish populations healthy?  How do we make diving an unforgettable experience?  How do we ensure clean beaches, and sustain quality fish catches for our fishermen and or hospitality industry?  Do we want container ships berthing alongside five-star resort hotels?  Do we want to swim amid fish farms?
The EU's Green Paper on an Integrated Maritime Policy is an attempt to maximize resources, and to find a balance, starting with a year-long public consultation period. This forum is an opportunity to listen to Dr Borg explain why the policy is important, for the traditional maritime business sectors like shipping, fishing and fish farming certainly, for people interested in the environment as well, but also for a whole range of others who may not have traditionally seen themselves involved in these issues. This includes hoteliers and tourism operators, the leisure industry including yachting, boating and diving, and even heritage and the cultural sectors.

However, we at the Malta Economic Update believe that this is an issue of paramount importance to Malta, and so we are making the key texts available directly from here. Download the complete text of the Green Paper, or the shorter synopsis of it prepared by the Commission.
